The suggestion came from the leader of the -extend project (see comment 1 for a clarification), which is a community driven initiative, not associated with O<a href=\"http:\/\/www.openfoam.com\/\">penCFD, the producers of OpenFOAM<\/a>.\u00a0 The idea behind re-licensing is of increasing the number of users of the code, and to &#8220;free up&#8221; the code more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openfoam.com\/\">OpenCFD<\/a>, who legally own the OpenFOAM trademark, stated their position on the topic today, with an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openfoam.com\/legal\/open-source.php\" target=\"_blank\">article on their website<\/a>, clarifying that their release <em>will remain under the GPL license<\/em>, <em>and will never switch to a weaker version of it, like the LGPL.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">OpenCFD did the right thing. Kudos to them!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Update: <\/strong>On March 1<sup>st<\/sup> 2011, OpenCFD launched their campaign &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.openfoam.com\/news\/open-free.php\" target=\"_blank\">Keep OpenFOAM<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> open and free<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>This offering is  not       approved       or endorsed by OpenCFD    Limited, the producer of  the OpenFOAM       software  and  owner  of     the  OPENFOAM<sup>\u00ae <\/sup> and        OpenCFD<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> trade marks.
